There is nothing like having a dip in your Houston swimming pool and spending some quality time with your children. However, the pool can present a lot of dangers for kids who don’t know proper swimming pool safety.
Here are the 3 pool safety rules every child should know about:
1. Don’t run near the pool area!
You have probably heard this rule a lot and for good reason. Not only are the edges around the pool very slippery, but you are just more likely to slip and fall when you are running around. With all the swimming pool water nearby, even a tiny slip could be rather dangerous for a child. Additionally, the area around the pool is rather hard to fall on and could cause something worse than just a scarped knee or bruised elbow.
2. Never go into the water without supervision!
Whether your child is at the public pool with some friends or swimming in your own backyard, your child needs to have adult supervision to ensure their safety. In fact, even adults shouldn’t use the swimming pool without a friend or family member nearby to check on them here and there. However, this rule is crucial for children and inexperienced swimmers.
Additionally, young or non-swimmers should be using flotation devices such as full life jackets or inflatable arm bands unless they plan on sticking to the shallow end.
3. Stay away from the swimming pool drain!
While a properly installed and maintained pool drain doesn’t typically pose any danger to anyone, past accidents dictate that swimmers and non-swimmers alike should avoid this area of the pool. So make sure your child knows where the pool drain is and that they should not swim or mess around in that area of the pool.
